We are already on day 4 of Coronavirus (COVID-19) confinement in Mauritius. Many are already bored at home which we can understand. We’ve never had a confinement or lockdown in Mauritius or even being hit by a global scale pandemic. While many are working from home, others have way too much free time that they don’t know what to do with – spending time on social media seems to be the leading activity.
With all of our events and shows postponed for the next few weeks, we will put together lists of online shows, movies, concerts etc that you can watch during your time at home.
While watching your favourite movies again and again may feel nice, right now things are a bit different. Many people are searching for new things to watch, there’s the need to connect with new characters on screen. We noticed that many people are searching for movies that mimic what the whole world is going through right now, the fascination with pandemic-themed films is spreading.
Even those who are not usually fans of the genre are joining the bandwagon. We have put together a list of pandemic movies that you can stream right now.
1. Contagion (2011)
This movie is probably the most watched at the moment. Almost the same scenario like the spread of the Coronavirus worldwide – it begins in the Chinese wet markets and the virus spreads so fast that millions are affected before they are able to get it under control. Contagion is very realistic in terms of the accurate depiction of a pandemic along with the perfect casting of Gwyneth Paltrow being the one spreading the virus. We guarantee the movie is going to make you weak at the knees.
Available to stream on Google Play, unfortunately not available on Netflix.
2. It Comes at Night (2017)
Another great horror-thriller full of slow-burn dread. Set in the aftermath of a planetary contagion, a family is surviving deep in the woods until other survivors start crossing their paths. Agreeing to share resources, they all start living together and begin to bond. After a few strange incidents, one of the newcomers turns out to be not too well… The movie is a grim vision of life after a major pandemic, where people live in fear with diseased dread returning to life.
Available on Netflix
3. 28 Days Later (2002)
Though people are more like zombies in this movie, it’s part of this list because of the way the outbreak is caused by animals. Also the “zombies” are not undead but are instead sick people. The virus is referred to as “rage”, where infected individuals become insanely violent and highly contagious.
You may want to stay away from this one if you can’t watch extreme violence on screen.
Available on Google Play
4. Quarantine (2008)
This is the American remake of [REC]. The movie happens during a virus spread and the virus origins and effects are left in the background. The fear of the characters can be felt and it shows the importance of social distancing. The movie’s atmosphere is just scary.
Available on Netflix
5. I am Legend (2007)
Years after a plague kills most of humanity with some transformed into monsters, the sole survivor in New York city Robert Nevill (Will Smith) didn’t give up on finding a cure to the incurable and man-made virus. Neville is alone, but leaves daily radio messages to who might be out there.
Available on Google Play and Netflix
